The mind set of many people is this, “If a little is good, more must be better”. In most cases, that’s not true but with teeth whitening that really is not true. Unfortunately, individuals who are chasing after “the movie star smile” tend to throw caution to the wind and end up hurting themselves and their teeth.

In the past, if you wanted to have your teeth whitened which meant the teeth would be restored to their natural color, you went to your dentist to have it done. If you wanted to have your teeth bleached which means your teeth would become whiter than their normal whiteness, then you would go to your dentist to have it done. Now, however, things have changed. There are many products on the market that claim to whiten teeth and bleach your teeth without the expense of going to a dentist making the process simplier and more economical. Home teeth whitening has become a very big business since it is much less expensive to do-it-yourself and the process has been simplified enough to make it easy to do at home. It might be economical, it might be easy to whiten teeth at home, but is it a good idea? Remember the mindset, “If a little is good, more must be better”? If you are someone who believes that, then maybe you should leave the whitening and bleaching to your dentist. Here’s why. If you feel pain with your teeth whitening, then pay attention to it because this is your body signaling something has gone wrong. The bleaching agents that are used in teeth whitening products such as hydrogen peroxide have dentists worried. Apparently, people who over use these teeth whitening products end-up at their dentist’s office. The major complaint is pain in their teeth which can be very bad at times. The dentists call this type of pain “zingers”. In 2002 a survey was done by The University of Southern California’s School of Dentistry of 100 individuals who bleached their teeth. Of the 100 people surveys, over 50% complained of pain that registered from mild to moderate in intensity after they had bleached their teeth and out of the 100, 4 said they experienced “zingers”. Home teeth whitening products are considered safe to use if they are used properly. That is, follow the directions and don’t use it more often than specified in the directions. If you ignore the warnings for using the product, there is a possibility that an addiction to the product can develop. Some individuals cannot get thin enough and will starve themselves to the point of destroying their health, others chase after their youth and subject themselves to many plastic surgeries trying to look young, and now we have individuals whose teeth are never white enough. With teeth whitening, addictive behavior can cause destruction of the teeth enamel and gum tissue surrounding the teeth not to mention the terrible pain. The problem with home teeth whitening products is the potential of not only to abuse them, but to become addicted to teeth whitening. The plus of paying more and having the work done at a dentist’s office is the fact they will stop before the teeth and gums are damaged. By doing the teeth whitening at home, there is no one to stop the individual from harming themself. So, is teeth whitening dangerous? It can be, but if used correctly, it has been shown to be safe. So follow the directions, exercise caution in using the product and everything should be fine. One thing to keep in mind, movie stars and wealthy individuals spend thousands of dollars to have those great looking white teeth. Those same dentists will keep those same movie stars from damaging their teeth and gums. What you do is your choice – it is your decision on how to whiten your teeth. Before you make that final decision, think seriously about what could happen to your teeth and gums if you make the wrong decision.
